Health Benefits of Drinking Red Wine

(in moderation)

By now, most people know that the benefits of red wine outweigh any negatives when drank in moderation. However, of the people aware of red wines health benefits, most only vaguely know that a glass a day is beneficial for the heart.

While mostly unknown, the benefits of drinking red wine are many:

1. Heart Healthy

This is the health benefit of red wine that most people know about. As the advice goes, have a glass of red wine a day to help prevent cardiovascular disease and raise your good (HDL) cholesterol levels.

2. Good for Your Teeth

Just like with vodka, red wine is good for your teeth. Due to its antibacterial properties, it is great for helping to prevent toothache, as well as preventing the tooth decay and gum problems that lead to toothache and sore gums.

3. Protects Against UTI's

Like drinking cranberry juice, red wine helps to prevent urinary tract infections, also known as UTI's or bladder infections. This is due to having a high antioxidant level.

4. Prevents Kidney Stones

For at least the last 35-40 years, doctors have been telling kidney stone patients to drink a glass of red wine or other alcoholic beverage on a daily basis to prevent another occurrence.

5. Improves Sleep

Red wine contains melatonin which is important for a great night's sleep. Melatonin is a chemical that can help your body adjust to a more natural sleep cycle, so you fall asleep easier when it's bedtime. So maybe next time you can't sleep, instead of reaching for a warm glass of milk (does anyone actually do this anymore?), have a glass of red wine.

6. Great for Cooking

Red wines make a great fat substitute. Instead of butter or cooking oil, find a recipe for fish, chicken, or beef, where you can add in those bottles of red wine you've got sitting around (not your good stuff, of course). The alcohol evaporates as it cooks and the recipe is left with a lot of flavor, but without a lot of fat (unless the recipe you choose requires cream for the sauce).

Just be careful with those red wines that are made specifically for cooking. With cooking wines, you're getting more than just wine. Salt is added to give the wine more flavor.
